A Greek City
Over 5000 years ago, the Greek city of Pavlopetri was submerged under the ocean. It remained hidden from the world until marine archaeologist Nicholas Flemming discovered it in 1967. Pavlopetri is the oldest Greek city to have been found underwater. It’s believed that this city is the true legend behind the story of Atlantis.

Nobody knows for sure why this ancient city was submerged. Researchers theorize that Pavlopetri fell into the sea after three violent earthquakes struck the area in close succession, but we may never know the truth. Yet, it’s remarkably well preserved. For example, 9000 square feet of roads and buildings were preserved.
