Gulper Eel
You would be forgiven for accidentally thinking you were looking at a pelican at first glance when you see this eel. It is also sometimes called a pelican eel because its jaws resemble the bird’s jaw. However, although it has a tremendously large mouth, it mainly eats small marine life like fish and crustaceans.

Not a lot is known about this rare species. They live in tropical waters at extreme depths and are rarely spotted in the wild. Most of what we’ve learned about gulp eels comes from studying the ones accidentally caught in fishermen’s nets. Aside from deepsea fishermen, their largest predators are lancetfish.
