An Egyptian City
Heracleion was an ancient Egyptian city that was located near the mouth of the Nile River. Unfortunately, this was not a secure location for a town; after surviving earthquakes, tsunamis, and rising ocean levels, it crumbled and collapsed into the ocean. There was no way to save the buildings.

Today, Heracleion serves as a marvelous underwater monument to ancient Egyptian life. Scuba divers can explore the remains of these ancient marvels, including a large tombstone carved with intricate hieroglyphics. Just don’t expect to check into a hotel in Heracleion! The prices will sink you. Pun intended.
