#20: Potato Fudge
Discovering that a so-called ‘long-time favorite’ isn’t quite as traditional as believed is quite the revelation. Potato fudge, a name that evokes curiosity, indeed exists but doesn’t come from ancient recipe books. Instead, its origins can be traced to a seemingly 1960s Kraft advertisement, where children are seen joyously interacting with a creamy sauce named potato fudge, lavishly served over a baked potato.
The twist in the tale comes when you learn there’s no historical evidence of potato fudge’s existence in the form described by the old ad, which closely mirrors a promotional piece for Cheez-Wiz. Yet, those intrigued by the possibility of potato fudge can find solace in its real form: a unique confectionery made using mashed potatoes rather than a concocted dressing to improve kids’ meals.
