#11: It’s Great to Be Alive in Colma, CA
Even the dead need someplace to live, and if they spent their living years in San Fransisco, they’ll most likely spend their decaying ones underground in Colma, California. In 1900, San Francisco outlawed burials in the city because city officials didn’t want to waste precious land space on the deceased.
Colma was founded in the 1920s as a necropolis when San Francisco relocated most of its buried residents there. Today, approximately 75% of the land is zoned for cemeteries. If you visit, you can see some famous graves: Joe DeMaggio, Wyatt Earp, William Randolph Hearst, and even Elizabeth Taylor’s dog!
