#3: Centralia, PA
In the early part of the 20th century, Centralia was a booming mining town. By mid-century, many of its coal mines had shut down, but some residents remained. Unfortunately, even those residents were chased out of the area in 1962 when a landfill fire spread to the coal mines and has still not been able to be extinguished.

The government could not put these fires out, and soon enough, the entire town was filled with toxic fumes and gasses seeping through cracks in the ground. And then sinkholes began to appear. The government tried to relocate all the residents, but a few stood their ground and refused to budge. They still live there today; if you drive through, you might spot them.
