Japan committed the first mainland attack on the U.S. when they sent incendiary bombs via floatplane, killing six people, including five children. The bombs landed in a forest outside Lakeview, which was lucky, preventing more deaths. However, President Roosevelt immediately imposed a news blackout on the event so as not to create chaos and fear.
