#19: Hildale, UT
Polygamy has been around for about as long as marriage itself, although it’s pretty rare nowadays. However, it’s still frequently found among the Fundamentalist Mormon church. That’s not to be confused with the Church of Latter Day Saints, which outlawed polygamy in the 1900s. Because polygamy was illegal in all 50 states, Mormons needed a place to live peacefully with their large families.

They found a haven in Hildale, Utah, where they were allowed to create their private community. Although polygamy was still illegal there, the authorities tacitly agreed to look the other way if the fundamentalists kept to themselves. Today, more businesses are moving in, and it’s becoming a bit more modernized; you can even find a sushi restaurant in Hildale!
