#9: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest
Here’s another wonderful example of Hollywood special effects being put to amazing use to create the way a character looks. The unbelievably talented Bill Nighy played Davy Jones, the squid-faced pirate, and he had us squirming in our seats. We found it hard looking at him, but at the same time, we couldn’t look away! He looked so realistic that we couldn’t figure out how they pulled it off.
Now we know that it was through facial motion capture. Of course, he didn’t even remotely resemble his character while he was on set, and Bill was disappointed that he didn’t get to wear one of the stunning pirate costumes that the other actors wore. Instead, he had to wear a jumpsuit with a headband and some makeup. But his boring outfit contributed to his fantastic screen image, so bravo!
