Did any of you have a slinky as a kid? We had hours of fun with those things, knocking them off tables, watching them walk downstairs, or even just bouncing them from hand to hand. It’s incredible how entertaining they are to play with, given that they basically look just like big springs.

Well, guess what? They started as big springs! Apparently, a mechanical engineer called Richard James was working on a way to keep equipment stable on ships out on rough waters, and he was developing different sorts of springs in the process. And with that, the slinky was born!
