Jack the Baboon
Jack the Baboon, also known as “Jack the Signalman,” was an extraordinary and endearing figure in railway history. In the early 20th century, in South Africa, Jack was adopted by a railway signalman named James Wide. Fascinated by the mechanics of the job, Jack soon began imitating Wide’s actions at the railway signal box. His ability to efficiently change rail signals and perform his duties with precision quickly captured the attention of the railway company.
Against all odds, Jack was officially employed as a signalman, receiving a wage and even a bottle of beer weekly. Remarkably, he performed his job flawlessly, ensuring the safety of train traffic along the railway line. Jack’s story continues to captivate and inspire us as a testament to the surprising capabilities and deep connections that can exist between humans and our animal companions.
