The First Culture Shock Experience
The early interactions between Japan and the United States were marked by cultural exchanges and moments of amusing cultural misunderstandings. During one of the first Japanese delegations to the US, a Japanese visitor found himself in a state of culture shock, being exposed to American customs for the first time. In a particularly memorable incident during a formal dinner, the Japanese guest, uncertain of American etiquette, attempted to hide his cigarette when he had finished smoking it.

Attempting to be discreet and avoid appearing rude, he placed the cigarette up his sleeve. Unfortunately, this resulted in an unintended consequence as the cigarette ignited his clothing, causing a minor fire and a moment of alarm. This amusing anecdote illustrates the challenges that can arise when individuals from vastly different cultures come together.
