Real Life Up
In 1982, a man named Larry Walters captured the world’s imagination with a daring and unconventional adventure that saw him ascend to a remarkable altitude of 16,000 feet above Los Angeles, California. Using a simple lawn chair, Larry attached a cluster of weather balloons to it and embarked on an improbable journey into the skies.
To put it into perspective, that’s approximately half the altitude of commercial airline cruising. As he ascended, Larry enjoyed an awe-inspiring and unobstructed view of the city below, becoming, for a brief moment, just a man in a lawn chair taking in the sights from the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. Remarkably, he managed to land safely after his whimsical flight.
