You may have heard that Earth’s magnetic field reverses from time to time. Yeah, that’s just a thing that happens every once in a while. However, don’t get too freaked out. It’s easy to feel a sense of overwhelming dread when you first learn about geomagnetic pole reversals. With a dramatic title like that, the apocalypse seems imminent.

However, scientists insist there’s nothing to be scared of. The North and South poles last “switched” about 780,000 years ago. We’re not “due” for another one anytime soon. Even if we were, this reversal happens very gradually over tens of thousands of years. None of us will be around when the next one happens.
