The Evolution of Human Hands: Focused on Fist Fighting?
Contrary to the belief that human hands evolved primarily for dexterity or hunting, research suggests their shape might actually enhance our ability to punch. Published in the Journal of Experimental Biology, the study indicates that while a fist and an open-hand slap deliver similar force, a fist better safeguards the fingers.
Evolutionary Biologist David Carrier, a co-author of the study, even posits that standing on two legs evolved partly to improve our punching power, highlighting humanity’s inherently violent nature.
