Do you ever think about how weird our fascination with pirates is? Technically, these were just thieves and bandits who would attack nice, law-abiding vessels and take their stuff. And yet, people dress up as them for Halloween. It’s like dressing up as the guy who broke into your house and stole your TV.

However, there is something that they did that is worth my praise and adoration: as I am an American who has learned to love our weird measurement system and has no use for metric, I am pleased to hear that pirates are the reason that we are so different from the rest of the world in this respect.
