#27: The Microwave
The microwave is one of the great conveniences of the modern age. Before its invention, if you wanted to heat up leftovers or pop popcorn, you had to turn on your stove or oven, which is often overkill for the small job you need to be done quickly. But do you know how the microwave was developed?
Percy Spencer, who was designing radar tubes and magnetrons in the 1930s, was once testing his machines with a candy bar in his pocket. Eventually, he came to realize that the candy bar was melting and that it was because of the electromagnetic radiation from his machines. This discovery eventually led to the creation of the microwave.
