I do understand the impulse that some people, especially older people, have to keep plastic on furniture. My grandmother was born in a poor part of town at the beginning of the Great Depression, and for most of her life, her family was getting by. Of course, if someone in that situation buys a nice piece of furniture, they will do everything in their power to keep it nice.

But it’s definitely a little sad because it seems to interfere with the furniture’s very purpose, which is to be used. I’d rather have an alright-looking couch I can put my feet on than a nice couch that I’m terrified to touch. It’s all about priorities.
