20. Are You Ready to Welcome the Christmas Spider?
In Ukraine, Christmas trees get a unique twist, trading the usual fairy lights for spiderwebs. This tradition stems from a heartwarming legend: a poor widow and her children, unable to afford decorations for their pine-cone-grown Christmas tree, awoke on Christmas morning to find it covered in cobwebs. Miraculously, the morning sun turned these webs into gold and silver.
Embracing this tale, Ukrainian Christmas trees are often adorned with ‘pavuchky’, small spider ornaments, and artificial cobwebs. This quaint custom is believed to have inspired the glittering tinsel that now bedecks Christmas trees worldwide, adding a shimmering touch to the festive season.
