Who doesn’t love a good naval statistics chat? During the war, the Germans had a fleet of 88 submarines, which sounds like a formidable force, until you realize that they only managed to sink about 5,000 merchant ships. It might seem like a lot, but it’s not that much.

Especially when you compare it to the fact that over 50,000 ships were in operation during the war! And to top it off, the Germans lost around 200 submarines, which means their success rate wasn’t great. I think they would have gotten a pretty low score if this was a video game…
