40. Sly Stone
Sly Stone, born Sylvester Stewart, was a defining figure in American music, leading Sly and the Family Stone through the vibrant soul and funk era of the 60s and 70s. His journey from fame to financial woes and homelessness highlights the pitfalls of the music industry, including royalty disputes.
In 2009, reports surfaced about Stone’s homelessness, living off welfare in a white camper-van in LA’s Crenshaw. A documentary titled “Coming Back for More” and articles revealed his living conditions and dependency on the kindness of a retired couple for daily meals and showers.
