34. Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses S. Grant, the 18th President and a celebrated Civil War general, experienced a financial downfall post-presidency due to poor investments. Despite his accolades, Grant’s finances plummeted, forcing him to join his son’s firm, Grant & Ward, which fell victim to a Ponzi scheme by Ferdinand Ward.

Battling financial hardship, Grant penned his memoirs in a desperate bid to secure his family’s future, completing them shortly before his death on July 18, 1885.
