Speaking of taking things literally, here we stand with a neck-romancer. It’s a sensible guess. How is a child supposed to know English is a ridiculous hodge-podge of languages that have been thrown together through a mixer to make a language that has very little internal consistency?
English is a difficult language to learn for good reason, partly because of that. It’s a mix of Old English, German, Latin, Greek, and many more. Sometimes, you hear words and wonder what language you’re being taught in the first place.
